Student Mobility The Netherlands
13 to 17 February 2023 | SintLucas, Eindhoven
In the week before the Carnival holidays (February 13th to 17th, 2023), SintLucas received a visit from a group of Spanish, Italian, and Norwegian students and chaperones. Our guests came to SintLucas as part of the project: "Re-imagine what is possible." The project focuses on collaborative learning in conjunction with multimedia, arts & creativity, and sustainability. During the exchange week in Eindhoven, the theme "FUTURE" was central, and all activities were carried out in multinational groups.
Arrival Day: On Sunday, February 12th, our foreign guests from Spain, Italy, and Norway arrived. The students and their chaperones from Ciudad Real, Milan, and Kristiansand were welcomed at Eindhoven Central Station by their host families, students from the 4th year of the VMBO program at SintLucas.
Day 1: During the first working day of the exchange, our Dutch students and teachers welcomed the Spanish, Italian, and Norwegian group to SintLucas. Our guests were amazed, saying, "What a beautiful, large, and impressive school this is." The students participated in pairs in a Kahoot (online quiz) to test their knowledge of the Netherlands, and presentations with the theme "our school, city, and country" were given with great enthusiasm. This was accompanied by authentic snacks from the participating countries. Then, the guests were given a tour of the school, conducted by our own students in English. In the afternoon, the visiting students had their first experience with the center of Eindhoven through a WhatsApp tour of the city. They had to complete tasks at various landmarks in the city.
Day 2: The second day of the exchange was entirely focused on the theme "FUTURE." The students and chaperones visited the Evoluon to explore the RetroFuture exhibition with specific questions. Afterward, the students participated in a workshop where they could apply the inspiration gained from the exhibition. They brainstormed solutions to problems they expect to encounter in the future. These solutions were placed in a time capsule, which will be opened in 20 years to see if the predictions came true. In the afternoon, a multimedia and interactive technology teacher from our VMBO program conducted a workshop. The students worked together on programming a microbit, designing the city of the future, and recording a podcast on the theme of "FUTURE."
Day 3: On the third day of the exchange in the Netherlands, our (guest) students and chaperones took a trip to 's-Hertogenbosch. The students had a guided history tour of the city center, a guided tour of the Sint-Jan's Cathedral tower, and a visit to the Noord-Brabant Museum, where they focused on the emotions evoked by the artworks and expressed their thoughts. Some guests, including visiting teachers, tried the Bossche bol (a local pastry).
Day 4: During the fourth day of the exchange, the students and their guests explored AR and VR worlds in CoSpaces. They discovered the 7 worlds of technology, such as yellow: food and nature, and purple: digital, media, and entertainment. They then brainstormed how a future world within their chosen field of technology might look. The students designed and coded their own VR worlds and experienced a VR world through VR goggles. In the evening, it was time for relaxation. The students enjoyed a pleasant meal by grilling together and eating ice cream. Afterwards, everyone went bowling.
Day 5: On Friday, the students and teachers began with an active exchange program of freerunning and BMX at Area 51, led by a gym teacher from SintLucas. In the afternoon, it was time for the closing ceremony and the presentation of participation certificates. The Carnival school party was also on the agenda. Our guests all had Carnival outfits or items to wear. While enjoying snacks and drinks, they looked back on a wonderful exchange week with their host families.
Departure Day: On Saturday, it was time to say goodbye. The students realized that even within a week, they could build a very close bond with others. It was a fantastic week!
